The Product

Medicash was established over 140 years ago in Liverpool. Today its membership totals over 137,000, making it one of the oldest and most established healthcare cash plan providers in the UK. The company is still based in Liverpool and employs 70 people.

Medicash Proactive is a group health cash plan with four option levels and premiums ranging from £1 a week. The main benefits the plan offers are:

Customers also get access to the Best Doctors InterConsultation service. Children’s (up to four children) benefits are usually half those of adults (depending on the benefit). Plans can be single or joint (called solo and dual), with joint plans costing double. The personal accident insurance cover is on a sliding scale, based on severity.

Medicash Extra is included. This is the ability to buy reloadable gift cards that offer discounts, including 5% off at Asda and Sainsbury’s amongst other deals.

As we closed for press, Medicash was in the final stages of confirming its new employee assistance programme benefit. This includes Day 1 stress intervention and a manager support helpline and should be in place now. For an additional 15p a week per employee, telephone advice and support plus access to six face-to-face counselling sessions can be added.

"In this new plan, Medicash has included additional benefits not usually included on HCPs, and done so even for plans that cost just £1 a week. We expect the new EAP benefits when announced to be attractive too.

"The question must increasingly be asked of £1 a week plans – why would an employer not want such a plan? It’s extra work for them, but the benefits are real as is the help now available.

"We have mixed views on retail discounts and personal accident insurance. The former has little to do with health but, if it makes the plan more appealing to potential customers and offers them real benefits then, why not?

"Personal accident insurance is common on many types of policy [even motor and household] but it begs the question why someone would need cash for an accident but not for an illness. Its main appeal is a big ticket benefit for a small ticket premium.
