Bupa appoints chief executive with an eye on global expansion

Former drinks giant boss has ‘exceptional’ international track record

Bupa has appointed Stuart Fletcher, a former president of drinks giant Diageo, as its new chief executive.

Fletcher, 54, succeeds Ray King whose retirement was announced earlier this year. He joins Bupa after 26 years at Diageo, which owns brands such as Guinness, Johnnie Walker whisky and Smirnoff vodka, and most recently was president of Diageo International.

Bupa chairman Lord Leitch said Fletcher’s “exceptional” international track record makes him “the right person” to lead the organisation through the next phase of its development.

“Bupa’s international scale, trusted brands and excellent market positions provide many exciting growth opportunities,” he said.

Over recent years Bupa has focused increasingly on developing its business in overseas markets. The organisation saw overall revenues increase by 6% in the first half of 2011, thanks largely to continued strong performance at its expatriate insurance and overseas healthcare operations. During his time at Diageo International, Fletcher was responsible for a wide range of markets, many of which are key to Bupa, focusing on three regional hubs: Latin America and the Caribbean; Africa; and the Middle East and Global Travel, as well as previously including Asia Pacific.

Prior to Diageo, Fletcher held various financial positions at Procter & Gamble. He joins Bupa on 1 March 2012.
