Doctor suspended for a year for 'dishonest' billing

A consultant has been suspended for 12 months after a General Medical Council (GMC) Fitness to Practice Hearing ruled that he had been dishonest when claiming payment for procedures on private patients.

Following a complaint by Aviva UK Health, supported by evidence from three other companies, the GMC determined that Dr Sethna Saverymuttu continually claimed for a more complex procedure than those performed and that he received higher renumeration than he was entitled to.

The Health Insurance Counter Fraud Group (HICFG), comprising 11 private medical insurers, welcomed the decision as evidence of the "positive impact insurers can have by adopting a collaborative approach in the fight against financial crime".
